ABOUT THE JUROR:
Antonio Lechuga is a multidisciplinary artist who was born [1985] in Dallas, TX where he currently lives and works. He attended Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles, CA.
Antonio’s practice focuses on the intersection of art, design, architecture and social change. He uses a varied visual language of materials and processes to discuss and investigate his culture and existence; both his existence and experiences as a Tejano living in the 21st century and it’s constant battle with the erasure of that history.
Antonio uses the current condition of today’s political climate to inform and guide his work. Through investigations, research and new technologies Antonio begins to piece together new narratives of a future for the Mexican-American of the Texas region while emphasizing and highlighting its rich, deep and turbulent past.
He has exhibited work both nationally and internationally but most previously at many regional Dallas-Fort Worth institutions including 500X Gallery, the Geometric MADI Museum, Arts Fort Worth, Craighead Green Gallery, Ro2 Art Gallery, ArtRoom and Love Texas Art Gallery. He has had solo exhibitions in 2022 at Love Texas Art Gallery, Fort Worth, TX, in 2023 at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center, Dallas, TX, early 2024 at Daisha Board Gallery, Dallas, TX and Various Small Fires - Dallas (2024). 500X Gallery is thrilled to announce a curated exhibition, TEXAS IS GAY! The curator is artist and 500X member Haley Cook! We welcome all LGBTQIA+ artists in the DFW area, age 18 and over to apply!
In response to Texas’s attempt to pass a strict “Don’t Say Gay” Bill and the other damaging bills they’ve pushed against our Trans family, this pride month, we’d like to dedicate our project space to our strong and beautiful LGBTQIA+ community. They can try their hardest, but the truth is that Texas is BIG AND GAY!!! Ain’t nothin gonna change that. We’re calling all LGBTQIA+ artists living in the DFW area to submit their art dedicated to being Queer and to take up space like you deserve. It’s our home too.
ABOUT THE CURATOR:
Haley Cook (they/them) is an emerging intermediate sculpture artist based out of Dallas, Texas, where they were born and raised. They graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from University of North Texas and are a current member of the artist run gallery the 500x. They put together the Queer Clothing Swap earlier this year. Haley’s art works through the complications of figuring out being Queer in a society still set on rigid stereotypes and harmful social expectations. Their art works to bring a deeper understanding and acceptance of the diversity of gender and sexuality, emphasizing that LGBT issues don't only exist within that group, but in reality affect everyone. Their work is bright and playful, using traditional methods for modern themes with their soft sculpture. They use bright colors and pattern as a reflection of their own feelings about being queer - that’s it brings them constant joy.

Payment: visit our shop website (http://www.500x.org/shop) and purchase (1) "TEXAS IS GAY - Submission Fee" Submissions without entry fee will not be considered.

Did you never recover from it!? Are you STILL thinking about it RIGHT NOW?! What the hell was it? Relatable?? Well let’s see then! Submit to Flop Era for a chance to show an environment made from your mind. Install something in a corner, or from the ceiling. Regester was home-schooled in the Bible Belt, part of their mother’s attempt to protect them from the scrutiny of public school and instill a Christian upbringing in their education. They began working in art early in life, which eventually became a way to cope with, rebel from, and interrogate their experience as a young queer raised in such a strict, and conservative environment. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art in Art and Performance from the University of Texas at Dallas. Jennifer’s work has been described as a “sophisticated, eclectic Afrocentric style of artwork” by Stephanie Ward.Jennifer’s artwork is full of color and symbolism. She feels that color and composition play a very important role in expressing the meaning of a particular piece. She also feels that craftsmanship is key in the presentation of her artwork. Jennifer works to ensure that lively color and craftsmanship show in each of her pieces so that each piece of art has special appeal to prospective buyers.
Recently, Jennifer has been given multiple opportunities to curate groundbreaking art shows. Now, in addition to being an artist, she is a curator as well. The exposure to a variety of other art forms led her to photography as a medium. Huckaby holds a degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma, a BFA from the Art Institute of Boston, Massachusetts in photography and a Master’s degree from the University of North Texas in Denton. Huckaby has exhibited at the Dallas Contemporary, the Galveston Arts Center at Galveston, Texas, Renaissance Fine Art in Harlem, New York, New York curated by Deborah Willis, PhD; the McKenna Museum in New Orleans, and the Dallas African-American Museum. He then transferred to Boston University (BFA, 1997), where he received extensive academic training in studio art. For graduate studies, he went to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut (MFA, 1999). After graduation Huckaby used a traveling grant he received from Yale to explore France, Italy and Spain for two years. It was during this time in Europe that he “came to appreciate the Old Masters” and the difference in the social conditions of art production between the present and the past. About the Jurors: Brian Keith Jones and Brian Scott
“On a cold November day in 1990, “Chuck & George“ were born on a cracker. While having lunch at Jim's Diner, UNT art students Brian K. Jones & Brian K. Scott sat at a table and painted each others portraits on saltines. They then declared themselves “Chuck & George”. Though inspired by longtime art collaborators “Gilbert & George”, the pseudonym was derived by the pairing of each artist's existing imaginary muses. Chuck & George’s over the top collaborations often come in the form of multimedia installations complete with printmaking, painting, ceramics, papier-mâché, electronics, animation, custom furniture, floor and wall coverings and more. Their world is insular and the work self referential, inspired by loved ones, literature, music, movies, kitchen gadgets, politics and parasites. Chuck & George are co-founders and sole operators of the Visual Speed Bump Art Tour (originally the Oak Cliff Drive-By Studio Tour). Established in the year 2000 and heading into its 20th year the tour has grown beyond Oak Cliff to include artists from the West Dallas Tin District. The duos most immersive collaboration is their small 100yr old home. Every surface is hand painted and decorated up seemingly to inspire Pee Wee and Stanley Kubrick The impressive collection of art by a wide range of artists intermingles with their own solo and collaborative art. It is a rave for the eyeballs and open to the public every Spring during the Visual Speed Bump Art Tour “the world of Chuck and George shimmered with regret, compassion, annoyance, frustration, pity and love – usually all at the same time, and never without a pervasive, deeply artistic irony about the near-impossible task of staying true to yourself and to the people who made you who you are.” —Julie McGuire, Number: Seventy Seven (an independent arts journal), Winter 2014
